Program Summary

The streamlined, innovative and learner-focused curriculum uses an “ages and stages” format so that you can offer swim lessons across the lifespan to a broad range of interests.  There are many courses you can choose to offer that will provide a variety of programming options for your customers to explore the benefits and risks of swimming. You may want to focus on offering one “age and stage” when first starting out and add more to your program as you grow – or you may want to jump right in with a full lineup. The choice is yours.

The StarBabies and StarTots course introduces infants and toddlers to the water in a fun and loving environment. Parents or caregivers are taught the proper techniques to teach their infants and toddlers how to float, submerge, move in the water and rollover. Classes incorporate songs and activities to meet the swim skill benchmarks. Safety skill benchmarks are designed to educate the parents or caregivers.

The Swim School courses for pre-school, youth and adult students focus on meeting core competencies required to develop efficient swimming skills and age appropriate safety skills:

trust and submersion;

body positions and air recovery (includes rollover to back for air recovery);

forward movement and direction change;

rotary movement (transitions from rollover to side position for air recovery);

integrated movement;

functional strokes; and

age-appropriate safety skills.

The Stroke School courses for pre-school, youth and adult students develop effective technique and endurance for:

Freestyle

Backstroke

Butterfly

Breaststroke

The Starfish Swim Team is a developmental swim team program. It is designed to be the transitional program from swim lessons to a competitive swim team. This program can be a great way to network and gain exposure with the swimming community in your area by becoming a feeder system for competitive programs.

StarFun & Fitness provides eight different activity templates for scouts, homeschoolers, birthday parties, camps, after-school care and school groups. The activities range from water safety through fitness training - with everything aquatic in between!

The Children with Challenges™ (CWC) program is a ground-breaking curriculum integrating the latest techniques for working with children with cognitive or physical challenges. SAI has partnered with the USA Swimming Foundation and the Aquatic Therapy and Rehab Institute, along with world-renowned experts in this field, to develop the program which currently consists of an online course and in-person workshop.  The online course is required for all Starfish Swim Instructors working with children with cognitive or physical challenges. The online course takes approximately 6-8 hours to complete.  Program Directors are encouraged to attend the in-person workshop, where they will join the network of CWC professionals that share ideas and provide additional educational opportunities.  Program Directors that attend the workshop will also be provided with an in-water model to facilitate with their CWC swim instructors.

The Starfish Swimming Resort Course is designed for the student who wishes to improve swimming skills and has a limited amount of time.  The first step is an assessment of the student's ability before creating an Individualized Aquatic Plan (IAP).

Appropriate components from the StarBabies and StarTots, Swim School or Stroke School are selected and used to create a custom lesson plan after the IAP is created.  This method is best used for private and small group instruction.

Safety Training and Aquatic Rescue (STAR) is a practical and effective community water safety course that can be customized to the needs of the audience. Designed for non-lifeguards, it is an ideal training for parents/caregivers, child care personnel, foster families (water safety training is required in many locations), and anyone who supervises or may have to help others in, on or near the water. STAR may be provided completely online, in-person, or a combination of both.  While the STAR program package is an additional cost, Training Centers profit $10 per online course that they assign to a student.  SAI strongly encourages SAI Training Centers to provide this option for all parents and caregivers enrolled in their swim lesson program.  Review the STAR Getting Started portfolio for pricing information on the STAR program and materials.

The Starfish Swim Instructor (SSI) and Starfish Swim Instructor Trainer (SSIT) development system is designed to create excellent swimming and water safety educators, while at the same time giving you flexibility to train your own staff to meet your operational needs.

PADI Swim School

PADI’s commitment to providing exceptional programs for PADI Resort and Retail Members included the desire to offer a nationally and internationally recognized swim instruction program. After an exhaustive search, PADI chose to collaborate with the Starfish Aquatics Institute (SAI) and adopt the Starfish Swimming curriculum. The program is branded PADI Swim School and is managed by SAI.

The streamlined, innovative and learner-focused curriculum uses an “ages and stages” format so that you can offer swim lessons across the lifespan to a broad range of interests.  In addition to helping you generate more profit from the large youth learn-to-swim market, the curriculum is perfectly suited to help adults who come to you for SCUBA lessons but do not have the necessary swim skills yet to participate.

There are many courses you can choose to offer that will provide a variety of programming options for your customers to explore the benefits and risks of swimming. You may want to focus on offering one “age and stage” when first starting out and add more to your program as you grow – or you may want to jump right in with a full line-up. The choice is yours.

Exceptional Support for Your Business

The PADI Swim School program stands apart from all other swim instructor certification and training organizations in that we give you exceptional support and we will provide you with the framework necessary to offer a state-of-the-art swim lesson program. If you are offering a swim lesson program for the first time, our blueprint for success will guide you every step of the way.

Your start-up includes The PADI Swim School Business Workshop. This training includes:

Key planning components. You know what it takes to teach scuba, but teaching swimming is different. We’ll identify common questions you’ll get from customers that you may not expect, modifications you may need to make to create an inviting and functional physical environment for teaching swimming, and we will help you prepare policies and plan logistics so you are ready to go.

Scheduling to maximize profits. Using a diagram of your pool, we’ll help you identify which PADI Swim School programs are feasible for your facility, and how to maximize use of the space every hour of the day. If you don’t have a pool or outgrow your existing pool space, we will guide you as to alternative facilities you may locate in your area.

Finding, training, and supervising exceptional swim instructors and water safety ambassadors. Just like Scuba, your PADI Swim School program will only be as good as your staff. You’ll learn what it takes to establish your business as the aquatic training and water safety expert in your area.

Creating a safety plan. You’ll get hands-on experience creating one of the most important components of the PADI Swim School. You’ll learn how to reduce risk and develop a practical and effective response plan in the event of an emergency.

Once your dive shop becomes a Training Center and is authorized to offer the PADI Swim School program, you’ll have direct access to the SAI Client Services Office during all regular business hours.  They will put you in touch with the right person to answer your questions regarding curriculum, training, bookkeeping issues—whoever can help you solve your problem.  There is no cumbersome bureaucracy and knowledgeable people will help you.
